BA (Hons) Television and Film Design

Course Details

Introduction

The essence of TV and Film Design is the fusion of image and sound.

The creator experiments with, and orchestrates their complementary relationships, using the dynamics of time and space to explore and express ideas, contemporary issues and information, and to entertain and stimulate an audience.

This practical course offers a wide range of opportunities for students to examine and develop creative and visual communication issues, processes and products in the two main specialist but interrelated pathways, Visual Story Telling (the art, craft and practice of narrative and experimental film-making), and Moving Image Design (the origination, design, production and post-production of a diverse range of graphic products for the television and film industries, advertising, business, commerce and education).

What You Study

The curriculum is designed and informed by the rapidly expanding and ever-developing film, television and visual communication industries, which require a broad range of ideas and innovation from diversely skilled graduates.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on creative origination, problem solving and consideration of industrial products and processes.

In an open, supportive and stimulating learning environment, you will be encouraged to explore and experiment, challenge conventions and break down preconceptions which could inhibit creativity. You will examine, analyse and work on key creative elements which offer a dynamic mix of skills and knowledge, for example visual story telling, experimental film and video making, visual problem solving, narrative construction, directing, production, screenwriting, cinematography, sound design and production, editing & post-production, digital manipulation and effects, visualisation & storyboarding, design forms & functions, branding & identity, typography, presentation, production design, art direction, and project management.

At Level One (experimentation) you are encouraged to consider and explore a very wide range of visual and aural possibilities to understand and resolve visual communication problems. Technical workshops which introduce you to the skills necessary to realise your ideas, provide a foundation for further more specialist development.

At Level Two (orientation) you will develop specialist interests and directions whilst working to become more independent in the origination, development and management of more professionally orientated project work. Students are encouraged to seek work experience and work on live projects.

At Level Three (consolidation) you will work on your self-initiated and managed programme of projects is negotiated with and supported by a close working relationship with tutors and is increasingly informed by your professional contacts in, and knowledge of, industry. Your show reel and portfolio will include the design and preparation of appropriate materials to launch yourself in your chosen profession(s).

The programme is based around student centred experiential learning and responsive teaching. Key features are multi and inter-disciplinary activities, interactive and collaborative working across all three levels of the course, and self-initiated project work which allows and encourages each student to individually develop her/his personal voice.
